Heres a question from a real sore newbie. I brew wines, now I want to brew beer, mainly to cut costs. I like Killians Irish Red, but I havent any idea where to start. I dont even know how to classify beer, I just plain like beer. Any suggestions?

Buy a brew basic equipment kit, 48 bottles, and a kettle. Buy Midwest's Irish Red Ale kit; that should be close to Killians. Unlike Coors, er, Killian's Irish Red, this ale should be genuinely red due to the steeping grains, not red dye. I admit though, I like Killian's too. If you are not quite a beer person, make Midwest's Raspberry Red Ale and add 2 pounds of honey with 15 minutes left to the boil. Check out the light ales; that's good for newbies to beer.

I am not new to beer, rather beer brewing. I like MolsonXXX also, Macabee when in the mood for it, Tuborg Red the same. Belgian pale ale didnt hit off so well with me. So I figured on trying the Kiliiains first because its an all mood beer, not so heavy and not flavorless.

.75 OZ FUGGGLE HOPS (60 MIN)
1.0 OZ KENT GOLDING HOPS (15 MIN)
WYEAST 1084 IRISH ALE YEAST
PRIMING SUGAR

O.G. 1.058 F.G.1.015
SRM 12.4 PLATO 14.9

Dirk,

Thanks for posting the Killian's clone recipe.  I ran everything thru ProMash and the numbers for everything were close except the IBUs, which came out at about half what the recipe claims.  Any ideas?  Thanks.

Try again. Mine came out almost on the money at 21.7 IBU...

Your boil times are 60 and 15 minutes, right?

I'd substitute the extract with 9.5 or 10 lb. of Pale Malt.

I have some Killians Irish Red and its a Lager not an Ale. Would an Ale taste like a lager in this case? I bought it just to see what it was like since I am brewing the midwest Irish Red Ale right now.
