Before I started making my own, I tried to sticking to low cal, low carb beers. Just trying to keep the ole gut from getting to big. So what do the big brewers do to make a lower calorie or lower cab beer? Is is something we can do as home brewers?

Light beer is by made by first creating a highly fermentable wort.  Using adjuncts like rice or corn and mashing at the low end, as well as using extra enzymes to break down all the carbs that malt enzymes can't chew up.  Then after the super attenuating beer finishes fermenting, they dilute it to reduce the calorie impact from all the alcohol.  So, I'd suggest brewing a standard pale ale, 5 gallon batch, and then diluting it to 7-10 gallons(depending on how "lite" you want it) before bottling

Another option and the one I try to follow, exercise.  Right now, I am following a weight lifting program.  Last year, I did P90X.  I figure if I build muscle and burn calories, I can keep ahead of the dreaded beer gut and not worry about whether my beer is 80 or 300 calories .  So far, it's working.

Let’s keep one thing clear

The baits over there, the brews right here

Two six packs and a big bag of ice

Didn’t even catch a bite, but the brew tasted nice – G

What you need to do is cut back on your eating so you have room for the beer in your diet. Eat breakfast, drink lunch and dinner.

some of the beer software will show you how many calories a given beer will have. That way, you can figure it into your diet plan. Brewerslair.com has one that will show calories from just putting in the og and fg. Its under the beer analysis calculator.

+1 cut back on the grub and stay within you calorie range for your height and wieght and your given activity level. thats how I am loosing the gut, If you like to drink lite, or light beers then by all means that plan will work just fine. But just the though of watering down a great tasting beer....  I dont know how often you drink but I would drink upwards of atleast 3 to 4 times a week and put them down, and that does not help out much either. I am in that boat too, though I already have a semi gut, trying to get rid of it and be able to drink the stuff I enjoy along with it. I guess we will see how it works out. I decided that I would rather have a few good beers 2 nights out of the week than all that fat ridden over portioned food I normally eat every day of the week.
